It's election time in Canada, which means we have a lot of choices to make. Not just between political parties, but between voting strategically, compromising to prevent a worse outcome, or voting for the platform that most aligns with our values. And we can take this electoral notion across the border between literal and metaphorical too. Stay practical and ground in 'reality' or follow the dreams of imagination toward risk and reward?
Every day we are faced with decisions we have to make with our heads or with our hearts, layering choices on choices on choices. Every day we vote - with our money, with our attention, with our treatment of ourselves and others.
Every day, every moment, for me, conjures 90's hip hop lyrics from Black Sheep:
This or that?
This or that?
This or that?
This or that?
This or that?
This or that?
This or that?
This or that?
In moments of choice, I turn to this quote, often attributed to Theodore Roosevelt, "In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing." And of course Latrice Royale, "“I want people to realize, that it’s okay to make mistakes, it’s okay to fall down. Get up, look sickening, and Make Them Eat It!”
It's ok to make the 'wrong' choice, it's better than nothing. It's what you do next that counts.
This week, I told stories about Chamomile, and I hope it inspired you to be gentle with yourself. Sometimes we all make bad choices - we don't have all the information, or things just don't work out the way we wanted, we trust people we shouldn't trust, or pass up on opportunities out of fear or low self-esteem. Sometimes plain old bad luck can feel like something we brought on ourselves. But as Capt. Picard famously said, "It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life."
It's okay. You're still here and your choices have brought you to this moment in time in tact.
You can get with this, or you can get with that. That's life....
You can get with this, or you can get with that. You can get with this, or you can get with that. You can get with this, or you can get with that...
New on the podcast, a reminder that gentle does not mean weak.
