While working on this week's kinship episode - You Are Flamingo Kin - Pink Feathers And Thick Skin - I rewatched the John Waters film Pink Flamingos for the millionth time, had it on in the background as I fell down down down the rabbit hole of flamingo facts and myths to hit the ground of Dreamland.
That's what John Waters called the group he assembled to bring his cinematic visions to life: The Dreamlanders.
“We were a family. A demented, hilarious family, but a family nonetheless.”
In a sense, The Dreamlanders were not cast, they were conjured, human ingredients mixed together in a creative cauldron to create a powerful spell. A coven of freaks, saints, and suburban sorcerers summoned by John Waters to channel the divine chaos of trash and truth. Divine, Mink Stole, Edith Massey were witches of the weird, high priests of the perverse, who wove spectacle from imagination, turning Baltimore basements into altars of transgression. They lived their spells out loud: filthy, funny, fearless.
Like Witches, they relinquished the mundane, and made sacred what others discarded. Blurring the line between magic and madness, The Dreamlanders didn’t just make art - they cast glamours, turned Glenn Milstead into Divine, broke binaries, cursed the pearl-clutching bourgeoisie and hexed the lie of normal, knowing, as Audre Lorde did, that the norm is mythical anyway.
“It’s a minor cult right now” exclaimed Divine as Babs Johnson in Pink Flamingos, “but one that is growing and growing - growing faster than you can imagine. I will be queen one day, and my coronation will be celebrated all over the world. Do not forget: I AM DIVINE!”
John Waters may have been living in a dream world, but he brought those dreams up up up out of the rabbit hole to turn his dreams to reality. And so can we.
Our Coven is a family, a demented, hilarious family, but a family nonetheless, and we are all Dreamlanders.
All Witches are Dreamlanders.
Do not forget, you are divine.
